Dear Nathan,

Today you decided to grow up.  You decided that your crib was no longer cutting it for nap time and you attempted to climb out.  You never successfully made it out but Daddy and I decided we didn't want to wait around to find out if you could indeed make it.  So tonight we took the front of your crib off and attached the toddler rail to it.  You are officially not a baby anymore!  Only babies sleep in cribs!  Truth be told it was rather exciting to set up everything and start some new bedtime routines with you.  But there's no going back now and that makes me a little sad.  I'm afraid I'm going to blink a few more times and you'll be all grown up!  Love you to the moon and back!

Dear Nathan,

It's been quite awhile since I've sat down to write you a letter.  Maybe that's because I've been too busy running after you day and night! ;)  You are growing and changing so much!  You are talking up a storm and are learning new words everyday.

The subject of your vocabulary is why I decided I needed to sit down and write to you.  One of your favorite and most frequently used words is "Jesus".  When you ask about Daddy and I say he is at work you immediately respond, "Jesus?"  When I tell you we are going to church or youth group you immediately respond, "Jesus?"  When we leave church you say, "Bye Bye Jesus".  You love to listen and sing along to "Jesus Music" especially if it's in the youth room or in the car.  Your favorite books to read right now are all about "Baby Jesus".  You even have a Nativity set that you love to play with.  Your favorite part?  Baby Jesus!

Obsessed seems like the wrong word to use but for lack of a better word I'll just say it:  You are obsessed with Jesus at this point in your life!  And I'll let you in on a secret--Daddy and I hope your "obsession" continues and grows into a loving relationship that will stay with you throughout your life.

We love you so much son and so does Jesus!  :)

Dear Nathan,

You need to stop growing up so fast!  I mean it!  You are no longer a baby but a full fledged toddler.  In fact you prefer "toddling" instead of being held--except when you get hurt.  You know what you want, when you want it.  You love playing with cars and even make noises to go with!  You also love to throw things.  Unfortunately, that means ALL things. We are trying to teach you to only throw balls so as not to destroy our house.  One of your new favorite games is to point to things and wait for Daddy and I to name each thing you are pointing too.  When you really like something you are eating you will raise your eyebrows up and down and nod your head.  It's sooooo cute and makes Daddy and I crack up every time.  Oh and speaking of eating--you have finally decided that solid food may not be all that bad.  However you are very particular about what solid food you will try!  You are loving books more and more and pretend to read them by yourself.  A book even keeps you from squirming during a diaper change (Mommy was super excited about that one!)  You still love bath time and especially like putting your face in the water.  You are also quite fond of the dogs and love to give them hugs and kisses.  You have just caught on to how fun stacking things and knocking them over can be.  One of Daddy and I's favorite things right now is how you love to hold BOTH our hands when walking outside.  You are never satisfied with just one hand--it has to be one of each!  It's so fun watching the world through your eyes son.  We love you!

Dear Nathan,

Lately your new favorite thing is giving Daddy and I kisses.  You pucker your lips and even make the smacking sound!  We love kisses from our little boy!  You're starting to give them on your own without even being asked.  I know one day you may run the other direction when we ask for a kiss, but for now we are savoring each and every one.  Love love love you!

Dear Nathan,

Your first birthday has now come and gone and I'm struggling to keep up with all your accomplishments!  You have finally decided to start using sign language.  However you have decided that "more" is the only sign you like.  And you expect us to read your mind (aka guess) what you want more of.  Currently puffs or cheerios seem to be it!  You are crawling with your belly off the ground almost all the time now but will revert to an army crawl if you want to get somewhere fast (or get away from Daddy when he's chasing you).  You also have started pulling yourself up to your feet in your crib, your pack and play and the couch!  We may be seeing some of your first steps sooner than later!  You have decided you don't like being rocked before bed and prefer to put your head on our shoulder instead.  I need to stop blinking so much or I'm sure to miss something!

Mommy

Dear Nathan,

Tonight was just an ordinary night.  Daddy was at church so you and I did our thing.  We ate dinner.  You had time in your playpen to play.  And I gave you a bath.  But during bath time you decided that you wanted my undivided attention.  And when I gave it to you, you rewarded me with the cutest laugh ever!  You could not get enough of my tickles!  It was so cute and so much fun! I'm doing my best to record the sound of your laugh in my mind so I'll never forget it.  Love you bunches!

Dear Nathan,

You've have accomplished quite a lot in the last few weeks.  I wasn't ready to announce to the world that your first word was "Mama" since you seemed to just be saying it at random--not necessarily to name me, your Mom!  But now you say it all the time!  You also say "Daddy" as well although we think it actually sounds like "Dad".  We are also pretty sure you say some version of "Doggy"!  You are also finally crawling!  You don't like lifting your belly off the ground for very long so it's more of an army crawl.  And you are fast!  When you arrive somewhere you are often out of breath and covered with dirt and dog hair (despite Mommy's cleaning efforts!)  You enjoy taking breaks from crawling by backing up and then sitting up.  Oh and did we mention that you love touching anything and everything?!  Especially if it's NOT a toy!  The fake plants, cords, lamp and fan seem to be your favorite things to get into the moment we take our eyes off you!  The dog crates are quite fascinating to you as you enjoy opening and closing the doors.  You also love to tear up paper and magazines!  You are definitely keeping us on our toes lately.  But we sure do love you!

Dear Nathan,

Today we found you sitting up in your crib when we came to get you in the morning! You may not be crawling "officially" but you are sure figuring out how to move and get around!  Now Daddy and I are wondering if we should lower your crib one more notch--before we know it you're going to be standing up in there!

Love, Mommy

Dear Nathan,

You have been giving Daddy and I a run for our money lately!  You are fighting your naps and throwing fits at every turn!  You don't like to put toys away.  You get frustrated when you can't reach or have something you desperately want.  You don't like to sit in your high chair.  Or get strapped into your car seat.  And you don't like when baths end.  And you make your dislike of all these things known loudly along with full body fits!  We hope you will learn to communicate more clearly soon (we've been showing you sign language for all sorts of things since you were 5 months old!) but for now we will try our best to be patient and love you despite your fits!  (And we'll start praying even harder that sign language and/or actual words kick in soon!)

Dear Nathan,

Wow are you growing fast!  8 months have gone by in a blur!  You are starting to let us know when you don’t like something—usually in a loud voice! Things you don’t like currently include but are not limited to:  when Mommy and Daddy leave the room, when toys are taken away, and when you can’t reach something that you’re not supposed to play with.  You are becoming much more vocal too—your most recent babbling now includes “baba”—so close to “dada”!  You still haven’t mastered the art of crawling yet which is fine by me—it’s nice not to have you going all over the place just yet.  But as soon as you are on your tummy watch out because you are like a little log,  rolling to get to whatever you can find!  You are still taking two naps a day (Yay!) and have become really good at eating puffs with your fingers.   You now are going to the nursery on Sundays at church (you are too squirmy to remain in my arms any longer) and haven’t decided if you like it or not since Mommy isn’t there and it’s during your morning nap.  I sure do love you Son!

Dear Nathan,

I have a feeling you won't be contained to one spot much longer.  You are loving time on your tummy and are anxious to get moving!  So far all you've accomplished is scooting backwards a little--but you are close!  You've also decided you don't like it when Daddy or I leave the room.  You make your objection known rather quickly!  We are glad you like us so much but want you to know we will always return to get you.  You are liking most of the food you've tried except for peas--you make gagging sounds when we try to give them to you!  You aren't too interested in bananas either but you love broccoli, squash, carrots, avocado and pears!  You have been going to Kids Club at the gym on a more regular basis and seem to like it as long as the same caregiver is with you the whole time.  You are not a fan of being handed person to person that's for sure.  You are growing up way too fast so I'm trying not to blink as much!

Mommy

Dear Nathan,

Well you did it!  You finally decided that your tummy isn't all that bad.  And you started rolling from your back to your tummy!  Yay!  You're even learning that you can roll to reach things--especially in your crib.  The bumper pads, your stuffed monkey and your glow worm are all motivating you to move and keep moving!  I have a feeling it won't be long that we won't be able to keep you in one spot outside of your crib!  Watch out world!

Dear Nathan,

You have discovered the art of splashing in the bath!  Although it is quite fun to watch you giggle over your new found skill I am walking away wetter and wetter after your baths.  Maybe I should wear a bathing suit next time?  I think it's time your baths move to the a real bathtub, however you aren't quite ready to sit up all by yourself in a slippery tub.  This may take some creativity...

Dear Nathan,

Update on your tooth: I now am saying teeth!  Both teeth on the bottom in front are coming in!  Twins!  You can stop growing so fast now...

Dear Nathan,

Today I'm pretty sure I discovered your first tooth!  It's on the bottom.  Time will tell if it's the real deal, but I had to record this moment in history!

Mommy

P.S.  Maybe all the drooling you've been doing the last month and half has actually paid off!

Dear Nathan,

Daddy and I have discovered that when you get super tired you also get super silly.  You laugh at almost anything and can not stop wiggling!  It's pretty funny to watch!  I can only imagine how you'll be as a little boy when you're tired.  We sure do love discovering all of your little quirks!  Love you Son!

Dear Nathan,

Today we moved you into a new car seat!  You look so cute riding in it--but it makes me a little sad because you're growing up too fast!  I hope you enjoy your new view--especially since you'll be going on your first road trip to California soon!

Mommy

Dear Nathan,

Today you tried rice cereal for the first time!  I don't know how much you actually swallowed but it's a start.  You didn't exactly spit it out at first--but you definitely thought it was weird that I was sticking a spoon in your mouth and putting something in that wasn't formula!  We shall see how this goes...

Dear Nathan,

You are getting to be more and more fun each day!  You laugh and giggle (mostly for Daddy!) and smile at almost everything.  You seem to like the songs I make up and sing for you--maybe I'll have to record them one day.  Ha ha-not!  You are becoming more and more aware of the world around you--lately you have noticed the dogs and put your hand out for them to lick you.  You still do not like tummy time and prefer to be on your back where you can see more.  You are close to sitting up on your own but once you fall over and are on your tummy you do not like it!  You sleep completely unswaddled, although we are putting you in a sleep sack to make sure you are warm enough.  And you are a drooler!  A bib is a necessary accessory at this point in your life and if you don't have one on, your shirt is soaked.  Anything you get your hands on is in your mouth which for now is mostly your own hands.  This past week you have been going through a major growth spurt.  You went from eating every 4 hours and taking 2 hour naps to eating every 3 hours and only sleeping for 45 minutes.  Daddy and I miss your naps and hope they will return soon.  I love you son...more and more each day!

Mommy

Dear Nathan,

Today you made Daddy sick to his stomach.  You managed to poop through your diaper, pajamas and onto your bunny chair.  Daddy had to make a run to the bathroom when he realized you had also allowed poop to escape onto his hand.  Although I thought this was rather funny, Daddy would not like to experience it again anytime soon.  So if possible, please save your poop explosions for me.

Love you!
Mommy
